Industrial SEO Starts With the Words on the Print

Google’s results page now carries far more than ten blue links. In a June 2026 post updated August 31, Google reported that AI Overviews have passed 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode has passed one billion. The same post says Search Console now shows site owners which pages appear in those AI responses. That feature reached all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026, according to Google’s Keyword blog.

For a machine shop or fabricator, the lesson is plain. The page layout keeps changing, but what it draws from does not. Industrial SEO still comes down to whether your pages use the language your buyers use. MFG Empire is the manufacturing-only marketing firm Rodney Hill runs out of York, Pennsylvania. It sees one gap again and again on shop websites: the words on the site do not match the words on the print.

Engineers and Purchasing Managers Search Differently

Google’s SEO Starter Guide makes a point that fits manufacturing well. People who know a topic deeply search with different words than newcomers do, and the guide recommends writing with that difference in mind.

On the shop floor, the split is easy to spot. A design engineer types “Swiss turning 303 stainless 0.125 diameter.” A purchasing manager new to that part family types “precision small parts machining.” A sound industrial SEO plan covers both, with engineering vocabulary on the capability pages and a plain-language summary near the start of each one.

Build Pages Around Processes, Materials, and Specs

Search engines match pages to queries. A single “Services” page listing twelve processes gives each one a sentence. A dedicated page per process gives each one room to answer the search behind it.

Industrial SEO pages that do this well tend to include:

  • The process name buyers use, plus common variants such as wire EDM and EDM wire cutting
  • Materials by grade, such as 6061-T6, 316L, Inconel 718, or PEEK
  • Part size limits and typical tolerance bands
  • Secondary operations like anodize, passivation, or heat treat, and whether each is in-house
  • Industries served, with the standards each one expects

That page structure starts at the build stage, which is why our pillar on industrial website design for buyer qualification covers capability pages in detail.

What Google Says to Skip

The Starter Guide, published by Google Search Central, is blunt about a few habits that still appear on manufacturing sites. Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag. Repeating the same terms over and over counts as keyword stuffing under Google’s spam policies. Keywords in a domain name have little ranking effect beyond showing up in breadcrumbs.

Descriptive URLs, unique page titles, and image alt text that names the real part do help, according to the guide. A photo saved as “IMG_4471” tells Google nothing. Alt text reading “5-axis machined titanium aerospace bracket” tells it what the shop makes.

How Long Industrial SEO Takes to Show

Shop owners want a timeline. Google’s answer is that some changes register within hours and others take several months. It suggests waiting a few weeks before judging any single change.

Links matter in that window too. Google says it finds most new pages through links from pages it has already crawled. For a manufacturer, the natural sources are association directories, customer supplier pages, trade publications, and regional economic development sites.

Measurement is the newest piece. With AI appearances now reported in Search Console, a shop can check whether its capability pages are being pulled into AI responses. How those answers pick their sources is its own discipline, covered in how industrial AEO differs from SEO.

Industrial SEO Questions Shop Owners Ask

What is industrial SEO?

Industrial SEO is search engine optimization for manufacturers, machine shops, and fabricators. It centers on pages built around the processes, materials, tolerances, and certifications buyers type into search. Those pages are then made easy for Google to crawl and understand. Unlike consumer SEO, the audience is engineers and purchasing managers sourcing parts.

What keywords should a machine shop target?

A machine shop should target the terms its customers put on drawings and RFQs. Those include process names like Swiss turning or wire EDM, material grades like 316L or Inconel 718, part types, and the shop’s region. Pairing a process with a material or industry, such as titanium aerospace machining, often matches how sourcing engineers phrase a search.

Do keywords in a domain name help a manufacturer’s SEO?

Barely. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says keywords in a domain name or URL path have hardly any ranking effect beyond appearing in breadcrumbs. A manufacturer gets more from descriptive page URLs, unique titles, and capability content that matches buyer searches than from renaming the company domain around a keyword.

How does a manufacturer earn links to its website?

Most links for a manufacturer come from real relationships. Think trade association directories, customer supplier pages, chamber listings, trade publication features, and equipment dealer case studies. Since Google finds most new pages through links from pages it already crawls, each legitimate listing also helps new capability pages get discovered. Skip paid link schemes.

Should a machine shop start with SEO or Google Ads?

That choice depends on how quickly the shop needs inquiries and how strong its website already is. Google Ads can place a shop in paid results for capability terms right away, while SEO builds visibility over months. Many shops run paid search on a few high-intent terms while the SEO groundwork develops. MFG Empire handles both.
