Industrial AEO vs SEO: What Changes When Buyers Ask AI

A buyer who asks Google a question and gets an AI summary clicks through to a website far less often. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and compared clicks with and without an AI summary.

A buyer who asks Google a question and gets an AI summary clicks through to a website far less often. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and compared clicks with and without an AI summary. Users clicked a traditional search result on 8 percent of visits when a summary appeared, against 15 percent when none did. Clicks on links inside the summary itself came in at about 1 percent of visits, according to Pew Research Center.

Pew also found that longer searches were more likely to trigger a summary. Sourcing questions often run long: “AS9100 shop for 5-axis titanium machining near Charlotte.” When the answer sits on the results page, the shops named in it get the first look. This breakdown comes from MFG Empire, an agency in York, Pennsylvania, founded by Rodney Hill, that markets only for manufacturers. Getting named in those answers is the problem industrial AEO, or answer engine optimization, sets out to address.

Google’s Position: AEO Is Still SEO

Google has been direct on this. Its guide to generative AI search was last updated July 10, 2026. It says that from Google’s perspective, optimizing for AI search is still SEO. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index and core ranking systems. They use a “query fan-out” that runs several related searches behind one question.

The same guide lists things Google Search ignores, starting with llms.txt files. It does not need content cut into tiny chunks. Structured data is not required to appear in AI features, although Google still recommends it for rich results.

So the honest comparison is less “AEO versus SEO” and more “SEO with a sharper focus on how answers get assembled.” The groundwork is the same one described in industrial SEO and buyer search language.

Industrial AEO vs SEO, Side by Side

Here is how the emphasis shifts for a manufacturer:

  • Unit of work. SEO aims a page at a query. AEO aims at the individual facts an engine might lift, such as a tolerance, a certification, or a material list.
  • Content type. SEO rewards relevant pages. Google’s guide says AI features favor non-commodity content, meaning first-hand detail a generic summary could not produce.
  • Success signal. SEO tracks rankings and clicks. AEO tracks whether the shop is named or linked in the answer, now visible in Search Console’s generative AI report.
  • Where facts live. SEO centers on your site. AEO also depends on consistency across directories, association listings, and trade press, since AI assistants outside Google run their own retrieval.

What Non-Commodity Content Looks Like in a Shop

In its Search Central documentation, Google’s example of commodity content is a generic tips list anyone could write. The machining version is “5 Benefits of CNC Machining.” Non-commodity content reads like a shop wrote it: how you fixture thin-wall 6061 to hold flatness, why a part family moved from milling to wire EDM, what changed after you added in-process probing.

Those specifics give an AI engine something worth quoting, and a competitor cannot lift them easily. They belong on the capability pages laid out in our industrial website design guide, written in the words your estimators hear from customers.

A Practical Industrial AEO Checklist

Start with the questions buyers ask your estimators every week. Then:

  • Answer each one in the first sentence of its own section
  • State certifications, materials, and equipment as plain text, not only inside images or PDFs
  • Keep the company name, location, and capabilities identical across your site and every listing
  • Confirm the site is included in generative AI features inside Search Console
  • Review the AI performance data each month

No checklist decides which shop an engine names. This one gives the engines accurate, specific material to work from.

Common Questions on Industrial AEO

What is AEO for manufacturers?

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of making a manufacturer’s facts easy for AI search tools to find, trust, and repeat. For a machine shop, that means clear answers about processes, tolerances, materials, and certifications. Those answers should match across the company website and outside listings. Google treats this work as part of SEO.

Does a manufacturing website need an llms.txt file?

Not for Google. Google’s generative AI guide says its search engine ignores llms.txt files. Adding one will neither help nor hurt visibility on Google. Some other AI tools may read the file, so a manufacturer can add one at low cost, but it is no substitute for capability content.

Are AI summaries cutting traffic to manufacturing websites?

AI summaries reduce clicks across Google as a whole. In March 2025 data, Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits with a summary. Without one, the rate was 15 percent. Pew did not break results out by industry, but sourcing searches run through the same results page.

How can a manufacturer check whether AI search mentions its shop?

Start with Google Search Console, which now reports impressions for pages that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Then ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and other assistants the questions buyers ask your estimators, with no company name included, and record which shops appear. Repeat the test monthly so changes show up as a trend.

Is schema markup required to show up in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google states that structured data is not required for its generative AI features and that no special schema is needed. Organization markup still helps Google read a manufacturer’s details and supports rich result eligibility. MFG Empire treats schema as a supporting step rather than the core of AEO work.

MFG Empire: AEO From People Who Know the Parts

AI engines quote specifics, and specifics take shop knowledge to write. MFG Empire serves manufacturers exclusively. Rodney Hill, who founded the agency, brings over 25 years of hands-on work in CNC machining, tool and die, and fabrication. He also built a 2,500 user base at Dolphin CAD-CAM.
